NOTHERN REGION [BASED IN LIRA]
By Susan Opio, SU Nothern Region

In trying to carry out effective discipleship programmes in the schools, we distribute Bible Reading Materials (BRMs) and other relevant manuals.

I am glad because this had impact in the schools. They were excited about the Bibles and the Bible reading guides. We distributed 315 Bibles in clubs where sometimes none of the students owned one; this brought so much joy and gladness. Also later in the year, an outing was held for S.U
patrons (Christian teachers who run our S.U groups in schools) on 22nd November at Farm View Hotel .20 patrons and 3 volunteer trainers attended. Participants had testimonies to share concerning their involvement with S.U. This was a very refreshing moment for the patrons, volunteers and a few committee members.

The impact of the proclaimer cannot be denied. It’s amazing how even when it is still a new idea, it has become so popular. Listen to this; in all the 10 schools where it has been distributed club numbers have increased by 40% on average.

The patrons have reported increased interest in club activities and a good example is Rock View Primary School where a number of Muslim and Hindu children have joined the club because of the proclaimer. It is in this same school that the Head teacher has made it a habit to listen to the
proclaimer in his office before he does anything else. ‘These days, in the morning, I have to come earlier to school and listen for twenty minutes. By the end of the year I think I will be a good Bible scholar’, he said ‘This is a promising project.’

When we introduced the Faith Comes By Hearing (FCBH) programme, (This is where students listen to an audio bible using a gadget called a proclaimer and discuss what they learn in a small group), we didn’t know that it would be received with so much joy and excitement. Children and patrons were very excited at the prospect of having an opportunity to listen to the word of God as opposed to the usual reading from the Bible. We were able to distribute proclaimers to 12 primary schools and the response is a great encouragement.

We held P.7 leavers’ conferences during the month of October in both urban and rural areas.1429 children were reached from 25 schools. P.7 leavers’ conferences are rallies for 13/14 year olds who come together and have various activities like Evangelism, Bible Study, prayer and small group discussions as well as lots of FUN. We give all the glory to God.
